Editorial: Tribes growing more important in Okla.

"The growing power and importance of Indian tribes, actual governments within Oklahoma and the United States, is especially felt and challenging in the Sooner State.

Over the past months, various tribes have opened at least 68 casinos crowded with Indians and non-Indian gamblers losing money side by side. Millions are spent in these highly profitable and rapidly expanding parlors of chance.

Gov. Brad Henry has quickly grasped the taxation implications, economic impact and social importance of widespread gambling that was quietly authorized for the sovereign tribes by Congressional acts."
