DOI official says tribes won't manage bison range
Thursday, October 9, 2003

The Bush administration doesn't plan on letting the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes manage the National Bison Range, The Missoulian reports.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is willing to transfer some duties to the tribe, a regional refuge chief said. But the management will stay with the federal government, the chief said.

The range is located entirely within reservation boundaries and is home to a bison descended from a herd originally raised by tribal members. The tribes asked the Department of Interior to negotiate an annual funding agreement, under the Indian Self-Determination Act, to manage the range.
