Winnebago Tribe mourns loss of elder
Wednesday, October 8, 2003

A service was held on Tuesday for Stanford Whitewater Sr., a Winnnebago tribal elder who died last week at the age of 90.

Family and friends recalled Whitewater as dedicated to keeping the Ho-Chunk language alive. He taught at the Little Priest Tribal College for 10 years until he had health problems. But even then, he continued to hold classes in his home.

Whitewater will be buried Thursday.
