Senate panel to decide on Lumbee recognition
Wednesday, October 8, 2003
Leaders of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina are confident that a bill to recognize the tribe will advance to the Senate floor.
The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs held a hearing on the bill last month.
On October 22, the panel will decide whether to approve it.
A rival bill that would require the tribe to go through the Bureau of Indian Affairs has
been introduced in the House.
