'We are simply going to deal with what is dealt'
Tuesday, October 7, 2003

California tribes should have stayed out of the recall election, the chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians says.

Deron Marquez said the participation of some wealthy gaming tribes is hurting all tribes. "We're constantly being asked why we're giving so much money to [Lt. Gov. Cruz] Bustamante when we haven't given a penny to Bustamante," he told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The tribe stayed out of the race entirely. "As we sit here and watch things unfold, we are extremely happy that we do not have a horse in this race," Marquez said. "We are simply going to deal with what is dealt on Oct. 8."

Several tribes with casinos have spent nearly $12 million on the race. Most of the money, $8.2 million, went to support Bustamante (D) while nearly $3 million went for state Sen. Tom McClintock (R). Both are long-time supporters of Indian rights.

Front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger capitalized on the large dollar donations and ran ads accusing rivals of pandering to tribal interests. According to his campaign, the ads contributed to a surge in his poll numbers.
