Tuesday, October 7, 2003

About 1,000 people attended the first South Dakota Gathering and Healing of Nations, an event aimed at promoting reconciliation among Indians and non-Indians.

Sen. Tom Daschle (D) and Gov. Mike Rounds (R) hosted the gathering. Speakers included Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Chairman Harold Frazier and former South Dakota first lady Linda Mickelson Graham.

Sessions were held on various topics, including education, youth, health and law enforcement. Indian participants said they needed to be a part of decisions affecting them.
