Conn. towns support state in Indian tax dispute
Thursday, October 2, 2003

Three Connecticut towns who have fought the federal recognition of tribes and land-into-trust decisions are joining an Indian tax lawsuit.

Jo-Ann Dark-Eyes, a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, says she should receive a refund on her state income taxes because she earned income on Indian Country land. The state and the towns fear they could lose the case, The Norwich Bulletin reports, but Indian law experts say the suit might not be successful.

Another tribal member is challenging a property tax on land owned by the tribe but apparently not held in trust.
