School district says Native Pride not banned
Thursday, October 2, 2003

The Grand Coulee Dam School District of Washington on Monday clarified its dress code policy and said it never intended to ban "Native Pride" clothing.

Indian parents were irate about the policy, handed down early last month. They also objected to a ban on clothing with the words "In memory of..." and said the school district was being insensitive.

The district said it would not consider "Native Pride" or "In memory of..." clothing a violation of its policy. But parents and leaders from the Colville Confederated Tribes said the entire affairs is indicative of deep-seated racism. About 250 tribal members marched through the town of Coulee Dam yesterday to protest discrimination.
