House committee approves Shoshone payout bill
Thursday, September 25, 2003

The House Resources Committee voted 21-14 on Wednesday to approve a bill that distributes a $130 million trust fund to the Western Shoshone Nation.

Most of the money would be distributed in per capita payments of about $30,000 to about 6,500 tribal members. The rest would go to an education trust fund set up for Western Shoshone tribes.

The trust fund account derives from a land settlement award from the Indian Claims Commission. Some tribal members oppose the payment, saying that Aboriginal title to 23 million acres in what is now Nevada was never extinguished.

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs approved the bill in July.
