Alaska lawmaker sends wrong e-mail to tribe
Thursday, September 25, 2003

The Tlingit-Haida Central Council recently invited state and local officials to a summit. One Alaska lawmaker replied with a rather interesting e-mail.

"Let me see if I understand this correctly," state Sen. Con Bunde, a Republican, wrote in the e-mail. "We should buy a ticket to Juneau so these people can whine to us about giving them more money. How about when hell freezes over?"

Bunde said he only meant to send the e-mail to his staff but it represents exactly how he feels. "I broke one of the cardinal legislative rules and actually put into writing what I was thinking," he told The Anchorage Daily News.

A Tlingit-Haida staffer who got the e-mail distributed it widely. Council president Ed Thomas said he wasn't surprised by its contents. "I'm one of those who have never really expected more out of these guys, speaking personally," he told the paper.

The Southeast Funding Summit is being held November 4-6 in Juneau. The council is hosting it with a number of government agencies and businesses.
