Study: More Minn. Indians stopped by police
Thursday, September 25, 2003

Law enforcement officers in Minnesota stopped American Indian drivers at higher rates than whites and subjected Indians to searches at higher rates than whites, according to a study released on Wednesday.

But even though Natives were stopped and searched more than whites, police found contraband on white drivers at higher rates, the study said. The same went for African-American and Hispanic drivers, who were stopped and searched more than whites.

The study suggests racial bias, the authors said. It follows a preliminary review by the Minnesota state courts which found that Indians are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system.
