Letter: Letter: 'Bigotry' of Cherokee and Seminole leaders
Friday, September 19, 2003

"[D]ivide and rule began when British colonial traders introduced enslaved African people to the Chickasaws, Creeks, Cherokees, Choctaws and Seminoles in order to open a new market and close down an escape hatch for runaways.

Until then Native Americans, particularly the Seminoles, welcomed Africans. . . But now, in defiance of their proud history, traditional bigotry sadly has triumphed among many Cherokee and Seminole leaders."
