Senate votes to block new FCC media ownership rules
Wednesday, September 17, 2003

The Senate voted 55 to 40 on Tuesday to block the Federal Communication Commission's new ownership rules.

Twelve Republicans joined 42 Democrats and one independent in approving a special resolution against the rules. Backers said they plan to attach riders to existing bills to make parts of the ban into law.

In a party-line vote in June, the FCC agreed to allow a single company in large cities to own up to three television stations, eight radio stations, a daily newspaper and a cable operator. Television networks would be allowed to buy more stations.

The rules were to go into effect September 4 but the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals halted them pending further review.
