Native villages find new ways to fight fires
Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Thanks to a federal-state program, rural Alaska Native villages are better able to respond to and fight fires.

Project Code Red provides a "fire department in a box" to rural communities. The economical equipment is better suited to the villages, where limited water supplies the terrain and the weather make it difficult to support large fire trucks and systems.

Alaska has one of the highest death rates due to fires in the country. In 2002, the state had nine deaths per 1,000, more than 50 percent above the national average.
