AIM Leader: Anderson should settle trust fund
Monday, September 15, 2003

David Anderson's first priority as head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs should be to settle the trust fund case and pay account holders for 100 years of fiduciary mismanagement, American Indian Movement leader Vernon Bellecourt said.

"For more than 100 years monies that were supposedly paid for petroleum, minerals, natural gas, grazing fees, timber leases, have disappeared from the U.S. Treasury accounts," Bellecourt told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "We would urge Mr. Dave Anderson to see that the U.S. government, particularly the Department of the Interior, takes action that would reimburse the Indian people for the lost revenues."

The White House on Friday said it was nominating Anderson as assistant secretary for Indian Affairs. Anderson, 50, is of Ojibwe and Choctaw heritage, and is a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe.
