Legal threats galvanize Native Hawaiian community
Monday, September 15, 2003
Native Hawaiians and their supporters are worried about a slew of lawsuits that challenge Native-only programs.
Three lawsuits challenge education, housing and social service programs.
They were filed in the wake of a 2000 Supreme Court decision that struck down an election limited to Natives.
Native Hawaiians and Gov. Linda Lingle (D) are pushing for federal recognition. They say it would stop the legal threats.
