Debate continues on Calif. sacred site bill
Friday, September 12, 2003

Republican lawmakers in California are boycotting a vote on a bill that seeks greater protections for sacred sites.

An early vote taken in the Assembly fell seven short of the number needed to send the bill to the state Senate. Republicans were voting against it or abstaining, according to news accounts.

If enacted, SB 18 will require developers to consult with tribes about impacts to sacred sites. Some fear it will give tribes veto authority over projects.
