Senate committee to hold hearings on EPA pick
Friday, September 12, 2003

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will begin confirmation hearings on September 18 for Environmental Protection Agency nominee Mike Leavitt, governor of Utah.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) has placed a hold on Leavitt's nomination to get an explanation of airborne pollution at the side of the September 11, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. The EPA was pressured by the White House not to warn people about the danger of the pollution.

Leavitt is currently fighting the Skull Valley Goshute Tribe's plan to bring nuclear waste to its reservation in remote Utah.
