Groups encouraging Indians to enter legal field
Tuesday, September 9, 2003

Less than 1 percent of lawyers in Washington are Native American, according to data from the Washington State Bar Association.

The Northwest Indian Bar Association is one group looking to increase the numbers. Thanks to tribal donations and fundraising, the group awarded its first scholarship to a member of the Lummi Nation who will attend the University of Washington School of Law.

The Law School Admission Council awarded a $40,000 grant to the University of Washington School of Law for an outreach program to introduce Indians to the legal field.
