Haida First Nation rejects land-for-lawsuit offer
Thursday, September 4, 2003

The Haida First Nation of British Columbia is rejecting the provincial government's "take it or leave it" offer to drop a billion-dollar lawsuit for some land.

The government said it will offer 100,000 hectares up front, plus options for 100,000 hectares more. The land is on Queen Charlotte Islands, traditional Haida territory, and comes to about 490,000 acres.

The offer is contingent on the band dropping its billion-dollar lawsuit for offshore oil and gas rights.
