Column: Tribe's victory on sacred site gives hope
Wednesday, September 3, 2003

"The Zunis, after a 20-year struggle to stop the mine and its draining of the aquifer that feeds Zuni Salt Lake, a site sacred to Pueblo and other Indian people all over the Southwest, finally prevailed earlier this month - to their astonishment.

No one expected the impossible to happen - a powerful utility losing to a Pueblo tribe supported by environmentalists and, belatedly, by New Mexico's congressional delegation. But it did.

The Zunis not only won, they gave us all new inspiration to battle for seemingly hopeless causes - such as that of rational water planning in New Mexico."
