Unrecognized tribe disputes claim of lost title
Friday, July 25, 2003

The Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, an unrecognized group, filed a brief in federal court responding to claims that it has lost title to land in Rhode Island.

The tribe says it has a 1661 title deed to 34-square-mile of land. The American Land Title Association field a brief to dispute the claim.

The state is also fighting the tribe and contends that all outstanding tribal land claims were extinguished by the 1978 Rhode Island Claims Settlement Act.
