Maine tribe in dispute over tax-free cigarettes
Monday, September 1, 2003

The Aroostook Band of Micmacs in Maine want to sell tax-free tobacco products but the state warns of a confrontation.

The tribe gained federal recognition in 1991 but isn't a party to a settlement that subjected other tribes to state civil and criminal jurisdiction. The state contends it can force its laws on the tribe.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is siding with the tribe.
