U.S. to sell tobacco seized from Indian businesses
Tuesday, August 26, 2003

The federal government will sell 20 million cigarettes that were seized as part of a recent raid of tribal smoke shops in Washington and Idaho.

The tobacco products lacked the state of Washington's tax stamps. Indian businesses are supposed to collect state taxes on sales to non-Indians.

This past May, a total of 32 million cigarettes were seized in what the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said was its largest seizure ever.
