Court issues ruling in long-running water rights case
Thursday, August 21, 2003

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday issued a ruling in a long-running water rights case involving the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe in Nevada.

A three-judge panel upheld, reversed and remanded a lower court ruling on how the Nevada state engineer quantifies the rights of private landowners. The tribe, backed by the Department of Justice, is challenging an attempt to take water away from Pyramid Lake, a prized natural resource located within reservation boundaries.

The Supreme Court was asked last year to take on the dispute but declined.
