Paper Editor: Tribe should be more open to press
Monday, August 18, 2003

"A few years ago, I wrote to the Tribal Council, asking for a chance to argue for open meetings and records. The council turned me down. One councilor told me I was just another non-Ute trying to tell the tribe how to run its affairs. Then-Chairman Clement Frost wrote that my proposal was "totally inappropriate." When the Daily Times of Farmington separately criticized the tribe for closing forums, Pearl Casias, a tribal councilor, shot back: "Watchdog your own government! We are a sovereign nation!"

But heres the thing: The nontribal press does not have the greatest stake in knowing more about the tribes business. Tribal members do.

With all the money the tribe has made in gas and gambling, the potential exists for corruption, waste and abuse. Openness can help keep them in check."
