Unpopular Mont. governor won't seek re-election
Thursday, August 14, 2003

Montana Gov. Judy Martz on Wednesday said she will not seek re-election for a second term.

Martz became the state's first woman governor in January 2001, after serving four years as lieutenant to Marc Racicot. One of her first priorities was to visit all of the state's reservations.

Since then, Indian lawmakers and tribal leaders have not had too many positive things to say about Martz. One issue they were upset about was the lack of consultation about her program and budget cuts.

Although Martz said she was leaving for family reasons, her popularity has plummeted.
