Obituary: Jim Paul Egawa, Indian educator

Jim Paul Egawa, a member of the Lummi Nation of Washington and a respected educator, died of cancer August 6. He was 63.

Egawa's father was Japanese and his mother was Lummi. He was placed in a Japanese interment camp as a toddler during World War II.

Egawa retired as the Indian education director for the Tacoma School District. Over three decades, he helped lower the Native student dropout rate from 30 percent to 10 percent.
