Welch, Native writer from Mont., passes on

James Welch, a noted Indian writer from Montana, died Monday after suffering a heart attack. He was 62.

Welch was of Blackfeet and Gros Ventre ancestry and often wrote about being an Indian in modern society. He is best remembered for works like "Fools Crow," "�The Indian Lawyer,'" and "Winter in the Blood."

The French government awarded Welch its Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2000.
