Cherokee Nation voters elect deputy chief
Monday, July 28, 2003

Voters of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma elected Joe Grayson Jr. as deputy chief.

Grayson, a former Indian Health Service employee, faced businessman Gary D. Chapman in a run-off Saturday. Grayson took 68 percent of the vote.

Also approved Saturday were constitutional changes. One provision calls for the head marshal and the attorney general to be appointed. Another renames the Judicial Appeals Tribunal as the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court and increases the number of justices from three to five.
