Griles criticized by presidential candidate Dean
Friday, August 1, 2003

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean criticized Deputy Interior Secretary J. Steven Griles in a campaign speech.

Dean, former governor of Vermont, said Griles should resign because of conflicts of interest. Griles, a coal lobbyist, has made decisions affecting former clients.

"Although Griles said he would recuse himself when matters affecting his former clients came up, he remained involved ... meeting repeatedly with clients of his old lobbying firm and promoting their interests," Dean was quoted as saying. "This is a classic case of conflict of interest and breach of trust."
