Trust fund software latest target
The Bush administration isn't having much luck dealing with
the trust fund debacle despite attempts by Secretary of
Interior Gale Norton to get a handle on the situation.
In February, Norton told tribal leaders the
Asset and Account Management System, or TAAMS,
was a "critical" part of trust reform that
needs to be completed. According to a court
monitor's report released this week, she
may never see the $40 million system work.
And since the report criticizes the government
for withholding information from a federal judge,
Norton may soon see herself back in court in
a few months. The plaintiffs in the landmark
lawsuit are urging US District Judge Royce
Lamberth to set a trial date to continue their case,
fearing the worst from Norton and her top officials.

McCaleb goes on the air
Indian Country got their first big chance to listen
to Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb and ask
questions of the new head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In his first appearance on Native America Calling,
McCaleb tackled a wide variety of the usual suspects:
economic development, federal recognition and why he took the job in
the first place. It was largely a jovial broadcast,
filled with the "amens" which have been characteristic of
his tenure so far.
How long the honeymoon will last, of course, depends on
the decisions he makes. He gave some hints of his thoughts
on federal recognition which could bring bad news to
two Pequot tribes in Connecticut.
