Bush announces his budget
Now that the Republicans have taken over the White House, the days of free-wheeling spending on Indian Country are over.

The question then, is, when did it ever start? Tribal leaders who have protested historical under-funding of Indian programs probably can't recall and the budget President Bush released this week won't jar any memories.

Nonetheless, the Bureau of Indian Affairs did see some small increases in funding, as did the Indian Health Service. The Bush administration is proposing $2.2 billion for the BIA and $3.0 billion for IHS, slight increases over the 2001 level.

The same couldn't be said for Indian programs elsewhere, however. Indian funds at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Energy were just some of the many which saw the cutting knife.
