The Week in Review

Who is the President? Bush? Gore? Photo © AP. |
Missed our stories? All the headlines for the week can be found
here.
The election keeps going and going and . . .
John Potter is right about the elections -- Scarier
than Halloween.
If any voter in Indian Country, or
the entire country, for that matter,
thought his or her vote didn't matter,
that
sentiment has now been proven wrong. With
ridiculously slim margins
separating George W. Bush and Al Gore
in New Mexico, Florida, and elsewhere,
the election has turned out to be filled with
more lawsuits, intrigue, and name-calling
than the average tribal election.
Even races in Congress were close calls.
About the only sure bet was First Lady
Hillary Clinton's win over Representative
Rick Lazio in the US Senate. And
people blaming election woes on
Ralph Nader, whose Green
Party didn't get five percent of the vote
anyway.
So where next? No matter who becomes
President or if Slade Gorton beats out
Maria Cantwell, tribal leaders and Native
Americans will have to live with the final
choice and work with the new leaders.
As one Navajo Code Talker told Indianz.Com
over the weekend, "Whoever
wins, just go with it."
