Trust fund options get cold shoulder
The Department of Interior first announced plans to reorganize Indian trust duties last winter but many tribes have yet to warm up to the idea.

Criticism of a proposal to separate trust into two agencies resurfaced this week as Secretary Gale Norton spoke about options for change at a consultation session. Tribal leaders also pointed out the need for independent oversight in order to ensure accountability for the handling of $3.1 billion in funds.

The discussion occurred as the Bush administration moved to oust a court overseer from a bitter lawsuit. Court monitor Joseph S. Kieffer III was accused in court papers of threatening senior department officials.

Tribes, casino company fight gaming regulators
Three Oklahoma tribes joined a casino company this week to fight federal Indian gaming regulators who deemed a controversial machine illegal in the state.

The Chickasaw, Choctaw and Cherokee nations were rewarded with a federal magistrate's decision to allow the MegaNanza game to continue running for now. A lawsuit filed by Multimedia Games Inc. of Texas seeks to legalize the game under new rules the National Indian Gaming Commission recently finalized.
