Trust reform criticism renewed
The Bush administration's attempt to put a new spin on trust reform hasn't convinced a certain court official, who released another damaging report this week.

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton had her own report too, updating a federal judge on steps taken to fix the broken system. But court monitor Joseph Kieffer's took the spotlight as he described tensions affecting Special Trustee Tom Slonaker, the government official charged by law with making changes.

Clinton administration officials endured the questions and now it's time for the new folks to get their trial-by-fire. Will Wayne Smith, number two at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, survive?

Probably. But not after members of Congress, a couple of angry tribes and the media get their say. Smith was accused this week of harboring resentment against one California tribe while a Republican lawmaker sought assurances that the gaming industry wasn't influencing his decisions.
