The Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians in California has reacquired some of its ancestral land.

The tribe paid $2.1 million for 133 acres near Vallecito, The Calaveras Enterprise reported. The property is within the original Six Mile Rancheria and is home to graves and other important sites.

“The intent of purchasing this land is simply to preserve the historic grave sites and protect them from further ruin," Chairman Adam Dalton wrote in a letter quoted by the paper.

Dalton's grandmother and great uncle are among those buried on the land, the paper said.
