Former police chief from Swinomish Tribe sentenced for theft

Thomas J. Schlicker, the former police chief for the Swinomish Tribe of Washington, was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for stealing from his employer.

Schlicker, 57, pleaded guilty to a count of theft of tribal funds. He admitted that he stole more than $30,000 over a period of six years by directing the funds to a secret bank account. He also admitting misuing a tribal credit card.

“It is a sad day for our community. We entrusted him for 25 years… We trusted him and he betrayed our trust,” Chairman Brian Cladoosby told the court at the sentencing hearing, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Schlicker, who was fired in September 2014, was ordered to pay $17,849 in restitution to the tribe.
