The Bureau of Indian Affairs has placed 1,553 acres in trust for the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin.

Congress mandated the acquisition through H.R.3979, the National Defense Authorization Act. Section 3078 of the 1,648-page package declares that the land "shall be a part of the reservation of the Ho-Chunk Nation."

The land is the site of the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant. The tribe has been trying to acquire the land since 1997 but the BIA had raised concerns about environmental conditions.

Notice of the acquisition was published in today's issue of the Federal Register.
