Woman sentenced to prison for biting BIA officer in North Dakota

A North Dakota woman was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for assaulting a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer.

Jessie Marie Grant pleaded guilty to one count of assaulting a federal officer. She admitted that the bit officer Gina Szczur in Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in August 2014.

The punishment was lower than the 15 months sought by her attorney. Judge Daniel V. Holand also gave her credit for time served so she has about seven months remaining in her sentence.

"There is no question that Grant can and should benefit from getting treatment for drug and alcohol use," her attorney said in a pre-sentencing memorandum.
