Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is standing by its police chief despite complaints over a brutality incident that has resulted in federal charges.

Police Chief Ron Duke suspended, then fired, Rebecca M. Sotherland after she was seen on video repeatedly tasering an unresponsive tribal member. Sotherland is being charged with deprivation of rights under color of law and assault with a dangerous weapon for the August 15 incident.

Duke oversees a force of 36 officers but tribal leaders say he needs 51 to adequately serve the reservation. Some have reportedly left the department for North Dakota in search of better wages.
