A member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Karlene Hunter of Kyle, has been selected as one of three women in Indian Country to be honored in 2014 by the Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations.
Hunter honored as a role model

Native Sun News Staff Writer KYLE—A Lakota woman has been selected for honoring by an organization that celebrates and honors Native women. Karlene Hunter, Oglala Lakota, the CEO and co-founder of the Native American Natural Foods, has been selected as a 2014 honoree by the Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations (WEWIN). The organization works to provide knowledge, support and resources to native women in order to achieve success in their personal and professional lives. Hunter is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and has spent more than 25 years working on educational and economic development on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. She launched Native American Natural Foods with business partner Mark Tilsen in 2007 to produce Tanka Bars, a bison and cranberry protein bar. Joining Hunter in the honoring are Diane Enos, President of the Salt River Pima Maricopa Community and Hattie Kauffman, author & Emmy award winning national television correspondent. The Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations organization is committed and dedicated to strengthening and sustaining tribal cultures for the benefit and destiny of children and to educated about tribal cultures, the history and inherent rights that are exercised by Native people for the good of their tribes and others and in dealing with current issues that affect the tribe’s well being. WEWIN also seeks to promote honest and dignified tribal leaders and to support and encourage tribal members to seek leadership positions and to install a balance between service and solitude and between fulfilling responsibilities and devotion to loved ones. WEWIN also expresses encouragement and understanding and joy to others dedicated to following spiritual guidance’s and serving the communities as role models. Ms. Hunter will receive her award during the 10th Annual WEWIN Conference on August 18-20, 2014 at Green Valley Ranch Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
