Cobell Lawsuit & Settlement

Upwards of 50K in Oklahoma share in $3.4B Cobell settlement

Upwards of 50,000 Indian beneficiaries in Oklahoma will see payments from the $3.4 billion Cobell trust fund settlement by the end of the year.

The Obama administration on Monday announced the settlement was final. But Julia Lookout, a member of the Osage Nation, won't believe it until she receives her $1,000 check.

"I'm still a little gun-shy when they say it's over, because they've said numerous times that it's over," Lookout told The Tulsa World. "With the judicial system, you never know whether someone will find a loophole. However, this time, I'm a little less hesitant."

The $1,000 represents a portion of the settlement that resolves historical accounting. A second round of payments, for trust administration, will come at a later date.

The trust administration payment will be $800 but some beneficiaries will receive more, based on the level of activity in their trust fund account.
