Oglala Sioux Tribe receives $6.5M to build veterans cemetery

The Oglala Sioux Tribe has received a $6.5 million grant to build a veterans cemetery on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

The money came from the Department of Veterans Affairs. It will be used to develop the Tribal Veterans Cemetery on a 63-acre site near Kyle.

"Needless to say, this process was quite lengthy but in the end it appears that their determination and persistence have bee well worth it," the tribe's public relations coordinator said in a press release.

The Black Hills National Cemetery has been the only facility in the state that is open to veterans' burials. But it's over 100 miles from the tribe's site.
