Group doesn't believe massacre took place at Indian village

Survival International doesn't believe a massacre took place at a Yanomami village in Venezuela but says miners from neighboring Brazil continue to encroach on tribal territory.

Government officials visited a remote area of the Amazon jungle but found no evidence of an attack. President Hugo Chavez, who has tried to improve indigenous relations, also disputed reports of a massacre.

"We currently do not know whether or not these stories were sparked by a violent incident, which is the most likely explanation, but tension remains high in the area," Survival said in an update.
