Onondaga Nation to celebrate 400th anniversary of 1613 treaty

The Onondaga Nation of New York is preparing to celebrate the 400th anniversary of a treaty that was signed in 1613.

The tribe recorded the treaty with the Two Row Wampum Belt. The original is stored in Canada, Onondaga Chief Irving Powless Jr. said.

“Every time there was an event we didn’t write things down like you people do,” Powless told The Syracuse Post-Standard. “We recorded it in a belt.”

But two scholars say a written version of the treaty that's been circulating is a fake. They say the so-called Treaty of Tawagonshi uses language, terms and names that aren't accurate.
