Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia) wants the Senate to vote on S.379, the Indian Tribes of Virginia Federal Recognition Act.

The bill extends federal recognition to six tribes. It was approved by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee nearly a year ago.

"Recognition would place these tribes on an equal footing with other tribes in the United States by acknowledging their heritage and their right to be treated with the same dignity and respect as other Indian tribes in this country," Webb, who is retiring at the end of the 112th Congress, told the committee on July 12.

A companion bill has yet to move in the House.
