Alaska Natives participating in DNA and cultural heritage study

Alaska Natives from the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian tribes are participating in a DNA and cultural heritage study.

Tribal members previously submitted DNA samples as part of a 2008 study. The results confirmed the genetic nature of the Raven and the Eagle clans.

The new study will look deeper into the two clans and could possibly determine when their ancestors migrated around southeastern Alaska. In addition to DNA, researchers are also collecting oral histories from tribal members.

The Sealaska Heritage Institute supports the study.
