After first expressing ambivalence, the United Auburn Indian Community of California has fired its administrator, who has been accused of participating in a scam to steal $18.6 million from the tribe.

The Internal Revenue Service says Gregory Baker and two others overbilled the tribe for construction work. The money was used to purchase commercial properties, vacation homes, luxury cars and other assets across the country.

"[Baker] was terminated for cause because of the seriousness of the allegations," tribal spokesperson Doug Elmets told The Sacramento Bee.

The tribe suspended Baker last week. At the time, Elmets noted that "No wrongdoing has been proven."
