Catherine Attla, Athabascan author, passes away in Alaska





Catherine Attla, a Koyukon Athabascan elder and author, passed away on Monday.

Attla was born in 1927. She grew up speaking Athabascan and learned subsistence skills and folklore from her grandparents, according to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Attla taught herself how to speak, write and read English. She went on to become an author and storyteller who enjoyed passing on Athabascan traditions to new generations.
